Abstract

Beshair al-nubuvvet is a concept which refers to the claim of being Prophet Muhammad prophesied in the Bible. This idea is one of the methods employed in the Islamic tradition to prove the prophethood of Prophet Muhammad. The source of this idea is Qur?an. The most ancient religious traditions and texts speak of a savior who will come at the end of times. However, this belief is not included in the Qur?an with such a precise manner. Unlike, Qur?an indicates that Prophet Muhammed is the last prophet and person who expected by the Jews and Christians. The issue of being Prophet Muhammed prophesied in the Bible has been one of main items of polemical literature between Muslims and Ahl al-Kitab, Jews and Christian. This study discusses the issue of the expectations of Jews a redeemer, and the same by Christians, as a proof to being Prophet Muhammad the true prophet. For this, the thesis focuses on the expectation of a redeemer by related communities from pre-Islamic period and their relation to prophethood. The subject is studied in the frame of bashair and tahrif relationship in the early theological debate. In addition, it is tried here to present what is intented in Quran and Islamic literature by the terms of Tevrat (Hebrew Bible) and Injıl (Christian Bible) and to what extent they can be used as proof. The texts from the Bible which referred to by early Muslim Kalam scholars and Polemicists as proofs to being Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) true prophet are evaluated from the points of view of context and historical background. Also, this work includes the objections and critiques by early Jewish and Christian theologians against the concept of Beshair al-nubuvvet
